Designed and published a new J-STAC information

new J-STAC information brochure.

2004
Printed the first J-STAC organizational brochure
which explains the group, its goals and projects, and suggests ways
citizens can participate. The brochure provides the organization's
address, as well as meeting times and location.
Printed and began to
sell art note cards with original art donated by Bob and Arlene
Ledger. Price for the art cards was set at $8 per 5 pack.
Anamari Golf volunteered to be the registered
historian to provide validation of the age of the Lincoln/Tallman Witness
Tree so that an application could be made to honor the tree as a National
Historic Tree.
Procured an Urban Forestry Grant
which will be used for reprinting the RockCounty Planning and Planting Guide.
Provided the first J-STAC Memorial
Trees in the program and planted five memorial trees in several city parks.
Provided the city with the template
for the proclamation to declare Arbor Day 2004 the Janesville’s first
official Arbor Day, with the proviso that it continue in perpetuity in
conjunction with Wisconsin’s Arbor Day.
Provided
an Arbor Day work day for the Moose Club to clean up the landscape trees
on the club property. The project was conceived in return for the
club’s generosity in letting the public use its facility for meetings.
Provided a 3 inch balled and
burlapped green mountain sugar maple for PeacePark and hosted a planting ceremony on Arbor Day
where the proclamation for Janesville’s first official Arbor Day celebration was read
aloud. This ceremony was videotaped and will be produced as part of
an education video program.
J-STAC volunteers spent hours (on the hottest day
of the year) mowing long grass and weeds around the arborvitae plantings
at MarshallMiddle School next to I-90.
Provided a pruning for green ash trees along
Kellogg Avenue.
Participated in the Tallman Artfest and hosted the DNR
History of Forestry display in honor of the 100th anniversary of forestry
in Wisconsin.
Participated in Rotary HarvestFest where J-STAC
volunteers dispersed information on urban forestry.
Planned and held the first (combined) J-STAC and
City of Janesville Leisure Services Hike and Bike Day at Riverside park. This will probably become the
organization’s main fund-raising event and will be billed as
“Arborfest” in the future.
Produced the initial stages of a video on
educational video on tree planting, pruning and care in conjunction with
local cable access television channel JATV-12. The show was aired on JATV-12 in 2005.
Began record-keeping efforts in
preparation for the first application to have Janesville declared a Tree City USA. Collected, floated, treated and
planted 250 white oak acorns collected from the Tallman Witness
trees. 100 of the acorns sank indicated heavy kernels inside.
150 floated indicating they might be small, shriveled, rotted, wormy, or
otherwise damaged. Six sprouts resulted: four from the sinkers and
two from the floaters. There are now six sprouts and six
two-year-old seedlings from the Witness Trees for sale. The trees
are priced for sale at $25.00.

Produced the second annual ArborFest complete with vendors, exhibits and concessions (76 participants).

Arbor
Day planting: flowering dogwood and historic overcup oak from Lion Farm
in Kentucky on Tallman Grounds with the help of Washington School
fourth grade students.
Staffed booth two Saturdays at Farmer's Market, offering educational and promotional information.
Completed planting video for spring presentation on JATV-12.
Donated
$150 to JATV in support of their programming and in recognition of
their help in the production of the tree planting video.
Hosted a tour of JSTAC projects for WDNR officials Paul DeLong, Rick Wojciak, Tim Hulhern and Ted Pyrek.
JSTAC members were invoted to a Morning Optimist meeting for recognition of Committee work.
Requested
and received a grant for $2,500 from the Janesville Area Visitors and
Convention Bureau to fund ArborFest newspapers advertising for outside
the Janesville area.
2006:
Delivered adequate planning and planting brochures for approximately 20 per public school 4th grade class curriculum.
Intergovernmental Committee attended the Urban Forestry Council Tree City Award Banquet for 2005.
Held
annual Arbor Day ceremony at Paw Print Park. Planted 16 large
bare root bur oaks. Boy Scouts and J-STAC members planted
hundreds of Arbor Day oak seedlings.
Replaced the first Arbor Day arborvitae on Milton Avenue with a flowering pear.
Provided educational support at the Welcy Center Memorial Day event.
Requested and received $2,045 Urban Forestry Grant to perform a partial street tree inventory and improve our educational booth.
Provided educational support at the Tallman Art Festival.
Provided minor maintenance to previous Arbor Day plantings.
Added arborvitae plantings at Marshall Middle School for privacy and noise screen.
Built and prepared several dozen bird houses as a fund-raiser with a donation of materials from Marling Lumber.

Attended Emerald ash borer workshop presented by Wisconsin DNR and USDA APHIS personnel.
Prepared and submitted the 2006 documentation for Tree City USA and the first Growth Award for Janesville.

ArborFest 2006 provided for Janesville including: guided tree walks,
vendors, seminars on pruning and measuring trees, live music and and
food. (Approximately 170 participants).
Provided information on urban forestry and ArborFest on two dates at the Farmer's Market.
Doug and Cliff appeared on the Stan Milan show to talk about Emerald Ash Borer.
Continued
our support of JATV-12 with a $50 donation and the showing of "How to
Plant a Tree" video. The video received a Merit Award during the
WI Assoc. Peg Channels (WAPC) Video Festival.
Supplied the USDA APHIS produced EAB video for presentation on JATV-12.
City of Janesville agreed to fly the Tree City flag at the municipal building during April and May each year.
Bought and erected two new Tree City signs which were placed at main city entrances.
